Class of 2018 | Avoyelles Public Charter School
This summer I participated in the AHEC of a Summer Program at Avoyelles Hospital in Marksville, Louisiana. This program was developed for juniors in high school who are interested in entering the medical field. Throughout this program, students work along side doctors, nurses, and other important staff members of the hospital. During this program, I visited many areas of the hospital like surgery, E.R., pharmacy, housekeeping, materials management, dietary, and med/surg. AHEC offers 1/2 of high school credit, so I did have to take tests during class time in the afternoons. Also, I had to be dedicated to this program, which was Monday through Friday for 3 weeks.
Going into the AHEC Program, I aspired to be a Dermatologist but this experience has offered me a more interesting and confident career choice.
During my time in Surgery, which happened to be my favorite rotation, I took an interest in the nurse anesthetist’s job. It was a privilege to see surgeries like an infected gallbladder removal, a breast biopsy, a pilonidal cyst removal, and a hernia repair because many hospitals do not allow AHEC students to sit in on surgeries. In the emergency room, I learned how to remove a fish hook from a finger, how to form a temporary cast, and how to take blood from a patient’s arm. In pharmacy, I learned how to organize medicine, prepare IV bags, and fill the crash carts. In housekeeping, I cleaned discharged patients’s rooms, cleaned bathrooms, and mopped a lot. In materials management, I organized and counted materials; this was my least favorite rotation. In dietary, I learned about how to prepare a patient’s meal based on their nutrition levels. In med/surg, I learned how to insert and remove an IV, how to properly interact with patients, and how to distribute medications. After lunch, the other students and I went to class where we discussed the events we saw throughout the day. We also took field trips to the LSU Veterinary school hospital, Our Lady of the Lakes College’s virtual cadavers, and other local medical practices.
After 3 long, eventful weeks of AHEC, the program ended with a ceremony and I said goodbye to all my classmates, who at this point were my best friends. I am grateful that I got to share this experience with other young students that take an interest in medicine as well. The knowledge that I have gained from this experience has redirected me into a new career choice, and it has made me more confident in entering the medical community.
If you think that you may be interested in medicine, then I strongly suggest you apply for the AHEC of a Summer program. If you are not eligible for AHEC, then there are other programs like Day with the Doctor and M.A.S.H. that you can register for. Even if you are not interested in the medical field, you should apply for any internship opportunities that appeal to you because they can help determine your future career. I loved every moment of the AHEC of a Summer program and I would do it all over again if I could.
Bohemian Chic is one of the most feminine and romantic style in fashion industry. Originally Bohemians were travelers or refugees from central Europe (the French word bohémien translates as "Gypsy" or "Roma people") and the word "chic" was also borrowed from French language, meaning style or elegant. This style started to develop it`s significant features in the middle to late 1960s and early 1970s with a huge help of hippie movement and their lifestyle. By the end of 2005 Boho collections invaded almost every fashion store in the biggest fashion capitals of the worlds - London, New York, Milan and Paris. Since then Boho style comes back to the runway shows every spring - summer season bringing back those flowing silhouettes, multi layered elements and huge amount of ringing jewelry back in our lives.
What Are The Main Elements of the Boho Style?
• Boho look is flowing, layered and colorful, but the colors are always natural and calm - earthy reds and oranges, and dark greens. Boho style also allows to wear light pastels and neutral color combos like gray, beige and brown.
• Ethnic and tribal inspired prints, floral motives and eclectic hints are the most popular Boho patterns.
• As for the footwear Boho Style allows to wear everything that is comfortable and breezy for summer - Roman and Greek inspired sandals, ballet flats, for cooler days it is an ankle boots, cowboy boots or knee - high hippie boots.
• Materials and fabrics used to create a boho outfit are just as important as the accessories. Boho gives it`s preference to natural fabrics - silk, cotton, linen, denim, wool. Crocheted, lace and knitted textures are a staples of boho style.
• Over accessorizing is a main feature of boho chic. Bracelets, heavy earrings and layered necklaces - bohemians wear them all together, combining natural stones and wooden elements with metals. Tasseled handbags, floral headbands and scarves are the most popular Boho choices.
How To Wear Boho Style?
Wearing bohemian style is not the easiest task, as any other fashion style boho chic has it`s own rules and tricks. But you will easily pull off Boho outfit knowing these little secrets. When building your Boho Chic wardrobe start with garments in natural tones and fabrics. Try not to include more than four - five colors combinations in your outfit, especially if your garment is already bright and catchy.
Choose silhouettes that will emphasize your personality and will look beautiful on your figure, but don`t forget to think about the comfort. The main idea of Boho Chic is to feel free and comfortable and live in harmony with nature. Flowy clothes, maxi dresses and wide leg pants are a perfect example of comfortable clothes. Boho is perfect casual style, you can go for a walk with your date, family and friends, you can wear Boho at home and even at work. We all have bad days. The days that we have no motivation to do anything, we don’t feel pretty, we don’t feel at our best selfs. Here are some ideas on how to improve your self confidence.
1.) Spend some time with friends that make you feel good about yourself. Dress up, put some lipstick on and go out to dinner with your bffs. Make sure these friends don’t surround you with negativity. It’s always nice to get together with your friends. Maybe take some cute pics - these nights always bring joy and memories that you’ll never forget!
2.) Maybe you’re tired of the same old nail polish color, switch it up a bitby getting your nails done. A fresh set of nails can make you feel put together and brand new. You can also change your hair. There are a lot of different styles you can choose from. Add some face framing layers or try a new color to boost your confidence.
3.) Get something new by shopping to upgrade your wardrobe. Spice it up a little bit! Try wearing those knee high boots that have been in your closet for months. Maybe you will like them. Add a bright color or a statement necklace to your favorite pair of jeans. Feeling well dressed can help you keep a mindest of positivity.
4.) Doing something for someone else brightens your mood. When you are rude to someone else, that reflects on your personality and you will be disappointed in yourself. This will lead to lack of confidence. When you compliment others or just make their day by being kind and inviting, that will boost your confidence. Being a kind person is something to confident about all the time.
Let's cut the negative and stop degrading ourselves. We are enough!! Stop pointing out what you don’t like about yourself and point out what you do like. You are beautiful just the way you are and there’s no need to be so hard on yourself.
